Where we are...

We live and work from beautiful Vancouver, BC.  We are a new start up and the Pacific Northwest is really fertile breeding ground for companies such as ours. The general population here has always been more aware and receptive to the hard truths of future sustainability.  Of course it helps that views as pretty as this one to the left are a half hour drive away on every side of this fantastic city. Not many places in the world where you can ski and kayak on the same day…

How we started...

A few years ago Mitali had to visit the local landfill to drop off some heavy stuff. Things that we really don’t think about everyday, hit her on the face like a ton of bricks. To know more about the experience please take some time to go tour your local landfill…

Then the research started into alternatives. Some of the players marauding about conveniently seemed to be hiding deep dark secrets. The energy consumption and toxic wastes from paper manufacturing is documented quite well.  The wide latitudes used on the word “compost” was quite a revelation. The word we knew to be used for stuff that goes into a dungy stinky pile in the backyard, was now used for stuff that needs precise ambient conditions like temperature, C/N ratio, moisture content, porosity etc. where apparently different plastics and “processed” organic single use items could be “composted”. In our city now no so called compostable plastics are allowed in the green bin anymore…

So the quest started for simple natural backyard compostable single use alternatives  and here we are…

What we think...

,This picture was taken not far from us (you can tell from the backdrop) at the site of a popular music festival a few years ago. Apart from the obvious garbage problem, the next step is that – even if we were to be able to keep it clean – the stuff has to go to a landfill. Then over time it’s going to leach into mother earth yada yada yada…

Our city, medium sized (greater) Vancouver, generates about 2 million single use disposable waste items from foodware alone – plates, bowls, straws, take-out containers and cutlery etc. You can multiply the numbers for bigger cities. We have to do something to stem this tide.

The REAL focus clearly needs to be on reducing waste generation. That is the only REAL sustainable solution. However this won’t happen overnight. So while we’re still weaning ourselves away from single use items, reducing significantly our landfill contributions by using BACKYARD compostable alternatives is the way forward…
